ANGIOLOGY
Heavy legs, ugly veins, pain in the limbs... at first they seem like unpleasant symptoms, we may even ignore them: it comes with age! Unfortunately, none of them will go away on their own. With the help of a good angiologist, however, these problems will ease and eventually disappear.
Angiology is concerned with the physiological function and diseases of blood vessels. Arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels form the complex system of angiology. The whole body is covered by blood vessels, but the science of angiology and angiologists specialise in disorders of blood vessels outside the heart and brain, cardiologists in the heart and its vascular system, and neurologists in vascular diseases of the brain.
Don't be afraid! An angiologist is not a surgeon, i.e. not a vascular surgeon. His job is to diagnose and treat vascular diseases with medication, to suggest lifestyle changes and to monitor the patient's condition. If surgery is required, the angiologist will provide follow-up care. He or she has an important role in prevention by carrying out screening tests.
The blood vessels (veins, arteries and lymphatic vessels) supply the whole body. Diseases of the blood vessels can affect all our organs if circulation is impaired or compromised in acute cases. Vascular disease usually starts with mild symptoms, and sometimes without symptoms, but even at this stage it can cause damage to the body. Early diagnosis is important so that with the right therapy, the doctor can prevent conditions that cause irreversible damage to the patient's quality of life.
