Dr. Zsófia Szakál-Tóth, cardiologist, graduated from the Faculty of General Medicine of Semmelweis University in 2017, and immediately thereafter began her cardiology training at the Városmajor Cardiovascular Clinic of Semmelweis University, where she worked on the full spectrum of cardiology inpatient care until December 2024. During the years she spent here, she gained outstanding experience in many fields, both in acute inpatient care and in the long-term care of chronic patients, such as the treatment of patients with myocardial infarction, arrhythmias and heart failure. Her main area of expertise was the care of patients who had undergone heart transplantation, thanks to which the internal medicine approach and holistic medicine became the main characteristics of her medical practice. During her career, she worked as a transplant coordinator for 10 years and was also a member of the Eurotransplant Council. In addition to her clinical medical activities, she actively participated in the practical training of medical students.
She pays special attention to keeping her professional knowledge up to date, for which she regularly participates in domestic and international further training. In the past few years, she has completed, among others, the Heart & Stroke course of the European Society of Cardiology, the further training of Harvard University, and the heart failure training jointly organized by the European Society of Cardiology and Harefield Hospital in England.
She has been actively involved in scientific research since her university years, as a result of which she received numerous awards as a university student. She has won first place several times at the Semmelweis University Scientific Student Conference and second place at the National Scientific Student Conference. She wrote a rector's thesis on her clinical research related to the care of patients undergoing resuscitation due to sudden cardiac death, for which she also won an award. She regularly gives lectures at domestic and international professional conferences. She started her PhD training in 2020 at the Városmajor Cardiovascular Clinic of Semmelweis University, and the clinical study that serves as the basis for her research focuses on the examination of heart failure patients awaiting heart transplantation. She studied law at Eötvös Loránd University as part of her postgraduate training, where she obtained her degree in 2024, which also helps her medical work, especially in relation to cardiovascular diseases and transplantation, as well as other health law and ethical issues.
She was awarded Resident of the Year in 2021, Semmelweis Hero in 2022, and Hope of Eger in 2024.
