Microscopic sperm examination
For the sperm analysis test, which is essential for the andrological evaluation, a semen sample obtained through masturbation is required. Please carefully read the information below about the sample collection and submission process.
Please note when booking an appointment that it is recommended to self-isolate for 3-5 days before the sample collection.
Preparations before sample collection
- The recommended self-isolate period before sample collection is 3-5 days.
- The sample must be submitted in a clean, wide-bottomed container, which is provided by our institution. The container can be collected during opening hours.
- If you are unable to collect the container in person, you can obtain a suitable sample storage container from a pharmacy. Other home containers (e.g. mason jars) cannot be used!
Method of sample collection
- The sample can be collected at home or at our institution.
- In the case of home sample collection, the sample must be transported to our laboratory within 1 hour, at room temperature.
- In the case of institutional sample collection, a consultation room is available for this. In this case, please arrive at least one hour before the booked time, at 13:00.
- Please note that on-site sampling may cause stress in some cases, so we primarily recommend home sampling.
Sample submission process
- The sample can only be brought in by the patient himself.
- When submitting the sample, you must sign a document confirming that you have brought your own sample and answer a few questions.
- Please make sure that the entire amount of semen (including the first and last fractions of the ejaculate) is placed in the container.
- The exact time (hours/minutes) of sample submission must be recorded, which our colleague will record if asked.
- If you had a fever or were taking antibiotics a week before the sample submission, please inform the colleague who takes the sample.
- Results and further tests
- After submitting the sample, patients do not need to wait in the institution.
- If only the test result of the semen sample is needed, it can be viewed in the EESZT system.
- The original, signed document can be collected at the reception, usually about 1 hour after sample submission.
- If you would like further tests (e.g. ultrasound, consultation, detailed discussion of results), you can book an appointment from 4:00 PM that day or sign up for a later time.
