The hydrogen (H2) breath test is a painless, non-invasive diagnostic test used to detect small intestinial bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance and other carbohydrate malabsorption disorders. The test measures the hydrogen levels in your breath, which can increase if carbohydrates are not properly digested or absorbed.
